"Jurassic World: Das gefallene Königreich" ist die Fortsetzung des Megaerfolgs "Jurassic World". Der spielte 2015 über 1,6 Milliarden US-Dollar ein und ist derzeit auf Platz 5 der erfolgreichsten Filme aller Zeiten. Wir, die "Watch.Read.Talk."-Autoren, waren begeistert von dem Film und konnten den zweiten Teil kaum erwarten. In diesem Beitrag unserer Reihe "Watch.Read.Discuss." diskutieren wir unter anderem, ob sich unsere Erwartungen erfüllt haben und wie uns der neue Super-Dino gefallen hat. 

Drei Jahre sind seit der Tragödie im Erlebnispark "Jurassic World" vergangen. Die ehemalige Parkmanagerin Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) hat mittlerweile die "Dinosaur Protection Group" gegründet, die sich für die Rechte der Urzeitriesen einsetzt. Die Isla Nublar, auf der die verbleibenden Tiere leben, droht von einem Vulkanausbruch komplett zerstört zu werden. Claire und ihre Mitstreiter, darunter Paläo-Tierärztin Dr. Zia Rodriguez (Daniella Pineda) und IT-Fachmann Franklin Webb (Justice Smith, Letztendlich sind wir dem Universum egal), versuchen die erneute Auslöschung der Dinosaurier zu verhindern. Sir Benjamin Lockwood (James Cromwell) und seine rechte Hand Eli Mills (Rafe Spall, The Ritual) sind bereit, eine Rettungsmission zu finanzieren und den Urzeittieren ein sicheres Leben auf einer anderen Insel zu ermöglichen. Claire überredet ihren Ex-Freund und ehemaligen Velociraptor-Trainer Owen Grady (Chris Pratt, Avengers: Infinity War) mit ihr, Franklin und Zia zur Isla Nublar zurückzukehren. Vor Ort werden sie nicht nur mit gefährlichen Dinosauriern und tödlicher Lava konfrontiert, sondern auch mit einer Intrige, die sie fast das Leben kostet. Zurück auf dem Festland müssen Claire, Owen und Webbs Enkelin Maisie (Isabella Sermon) verhindern, dass die überlebenden Dinosaurier, darunter Owens trainierter Velociraptor Blue, den falschen Menschen in die Hände fallen.

Wie seid ihr auf den Film aufmerksam geworden und warum wolltet ihr ihn gucken?

Katrin: Ich fand "Jurassic World" hammergeil! Daher war es sonnenklar, dass ich am Erscheinungstag des zweiten Teils mit meinem "Jurassic Park"-Hoodie im Kino sitzen würde! Es ist übrigens ziemlich cool, dass der Film in Deutschland und vielen anderen europäischen Ländern schon zwei Wochen vor dem US-Start angelaufen ist. 

Laura: Ich habe die "Jurassic Park"-Trilogie als Kind geliebt, deswegen habe ich natürlich die neuen Filme auch im Auge behalten. Der erste Teil von "Jurassic World" hat mir gut gefallen, deshalb wollte ich auch "Das gefallene Königreich" schauen. Ich war definitiv gespannt, wie die Geschichte weitergehen wird.

Wie schlägt sich "Das gefallene Königreich" im Vergleich zu seinem Vorgänger?

Katrin: Mir hat der Film etwas weniger gefallen als der erste Teil. Das lag vor allem daran, dass die Atmosphäre nicht so intensiv war. Dadurch, dass der weltbekannte Original-Soundtrack kaum benutzt wurde, nur ein kleiner Teil der Handlung auf der Isla Nublar spielte und bis auf Claire und Owen keine anderen "Jurassic World"-Charaktere vorkamen, war die Stimmung nicht die gleiche. Trotzdem hat mir "Das gefallene Königreich" gut gefallen. Das lag vor allem daran, dass er im Gegensatz zum Vorgänger mehr dramatische Momente hatte.

Laura: Insgesamt mochte ich den ersten auch noch lieber. Trotzdem ist auch dieser Teil unterhaltsam. Der große Pluspunkt bei diesen Filmen sind einfach die Dinosaurier. Mittlerweile ist die Technik so weit, dass sie unglaublich real erscheinen und das Filmerlebnis sehr besonders machen. Ich könnte wahrscheinlich stundenlang einfach bloß Szenen sehen, in denen sie ganz normale Dinge tun. Schon allein deshalb schaue ich mir diese Filme gerne an und würde wahrscheinlich nie komplett enttäuscht das Kino verlassen. Trotzdem fand ich es schade, dass die Handlung auf der Insel so schnell vorbei war. Ich mochte das Setting sehr, weil der Park mittlerweile ziemlich zerstört ist und ein tolles "Lost Place"-Gefühl hat. Die Militärgeschichte mochte ich nicht wirklich, vor allem weil sie langweilig und nichts Außergewöhnliches ist: Die Dinos als neue "Waffe" im Krieg einzusetzen, hat mich einfach nicht interessiert. Zudem sind die Gegenspieler alle vollkommen unausgereifte und eindimensionale Charaktere, was das ganze nicht besser gemacht hat.

Wie fandet ihr die menschlichen Charaktere - sowohl die bereits bekannten als auch die neuen?

Katrin: Von mir aus hätten alle menschlichen Charaktere und alle fleischfressenden Dinosaurier sterben können, wenn dafür der Brachiosaurus (Ich glaube jedenfalls, dass es einer war.) am Bootsanleger gerettet worden wäre. Ich fand es schade, dass nur zwei der "Jurassic World"-Charaktere dabei waren, zumal ich Owens Art nicht sonderlich mag (Sein Verhalten hat sich im Vergleich zum vorherigen Film aber deutlich gebessert!). Claire hat mir diesmal richtig gut gefallen, da sie sich weiterentwickelt und versucht, ihre vergangenen Fehler wiedergutzumachen. Leider durfte sie wieder nur dabeistehen, während Owen alle gerettet hat. Positiv überrascht war ich von Maisie. In den vorherigen Filmen des Franchise haben die Kinder immer kolossal genervt, aber die Kleine umgeht alle Fehler ihrer Vorgänger: Sie ist selbstständig, quengelt nicht, bringt sich nicht in Gefahr, ist nicht altklug und bleibt weitestgehend ruhig. Ich hoffe, sie ist im dritten Teil wieder mit dabei. Das Ende von "Das gefallene Königreich" ist schonmal vielversprechend in dieser Hinsicht.

Laura: Neben den Antagonisten konnten mich auch die anderen Figuren nicht wirklich überzeugen. Genauso wie Katrin mag ich Claire noch am liebsten, finde Owen aber auch in Ordnung und ihre gemeinsame Dynamik sorgt für ein paar nette Szenen. Das war's dann aber auch. Zia und Franklin sind ganz gute neue Charaktere, die den Zuschauer definitiv unterhalten. Insgesamt bleiben sie dabei aber ziemlich eindimensional. Viel mehr mochte ich Maisie - aus den gleichen Gründen wie Katrin. Bei den anderen Kindern war ich ständig genervt von ihren zahlreichen dummen Aktionen. Sie ist da mal eine sehr nette Abwechslung.

Wie sieht es bei den Dinosauriern aus? Was haltet ihr vom "Indoraptor"?

Laura: Wie ich oben schon erwähnt habe, sind die Dinosaurier insgesamt immer ein Pluspunkt. Auch dieses Mal konnten sie mich überzeugen, vor allem Blue. Aber auch der T-Rex hat wieder einen coolen Moment, als er Claire, Owen und Franklin auf der Insel vor einem anderen Saurier "rettet". Er und Blue haben wirklich Persönlichkeit. Was den "Indoraptor" angeht: Ich finde es etwas ermüdend, dass es immer ein noch "böserer" Dinosaurier sein muss. Als ob ein ganz normaler fleischfressender, aggressiver Dino nicht schon krass genug wäre. Mich konnte er nicht wirklich überzeugen, weil er vergleichsweise wenig Screentime bekommt. Der Zuschauer sieht nicht mal wirklich, wozu er fähig ist und was ihn jetzt so sehr von anderen Dinosauriern abhebt. Den "Indominus Rex" aus dem ersten Teil fand ich deutlich interessanter und unheimlicher. Er wird von Anfang an in die Geschichte eingebunden und bekommt eine wirkliche Einführung.

Katrin: Ich wünschte, die Produktion hätte den Mosasaurus als "Endgegner" genommen. Jede Szene mit ihm ist einfach nur purer Horror - besonders die unglaublich gut gemachte Aufnahme, wie er durch eine Welle taucht, auf der mehrere Surfer unterwegs sind. Das ist der Stoff, aus dem Albträume gemacht sind! Der "Indoraptor" hat mich einfach nur enttäuscht. Er sieht aus, wie ein Velociraptor mit goldener Färbung an den Seiten. Natürlich konnte er nicht so groß sein, wie der "Indominus Rex", da er sonst nicht in die Villa gepasst hätte. Aber im Gegensatz zu zahlreichen anderen Sauriern fand ich ihn schon etwas langweilig. Dass er wie ein Hund dressiert war, hat ihn auch nicht gerade furchterregender gemacht.

Welche Szene hat euch am wenigsten gefallen?

Das ist ein Dinosaurier und keine böse Hexe!

Laura: Wo wir gerade schon beim "Indoraptor" sind: Seine Todesszene ist einfach komplett überzogen. Musste er wirklich in Zeitlupe durch das Glasdach stürzen und dann so brutal von einem Dinoskelett aufgespießt werden? Dann wird seine Leiche auch noch durch einen Blitz im dunklen Raum erleuchtet und dazu kommt natürlich noch dramatische Musik. Bei so viel Übertreibung konnte ich nur mit dem Kopf schütteln.

Katrin: Alle mit dem "Indoraptor" - besonders die, in der er in Maisies Zimmer ist. Es ist einfach nur lächerlich, dass er langsam die Tür aufmacht und sich durch den Raum schleicht, als sei er ein Einbrecher und kein wildes Tier. Außerdem fand ich es wirklich schade, dass keiner der Charaktere auf die Enthüllung des großen Geheimnisses (Das ich schon ziemlich früh erraten habe.) eingegangen ist.

Und welche am besten?

Katrin: Die oben bereits angesprochene Szene, in der die Menschen mit einem Boot von der Insel fliehen und ein einzelner Brachiosaurus am Anleger steht - hinter ihm Lava und Aschewolken - der ganz klägliche Laute von sich gibt, als würde er um Hilfe rufen. Ich bin bei Filmen selten emotional, aber der Moment hat mir wirklich wehgetan. Er hat mehr als alle anderen Szenen in beiden "Jurassic World"-Filmen gezeigt, dass Dinosaurier keine Spielzeuge und Killer sind, sondern Lebewesen. Claires völlig verzweifelter Blick macht die Sequenz noch trauriger und eindrücklicher. Optisch mochte ich fast jede Szene - die Kameraufnahmen sind beeindruckend und sehr kreativ!

Laura: Für mich war das ebenfalls die beste Szene! Sie zieht sich so lange, dass es für den Zuschauer fast unerträglich ist, hinzuschauen. In diesem Film habe ich deutlich mehr mit den Dinosauriern mitgefühlt als mit irgendeinem der Charaktere. Ansonsten haben mir auch alle Szenen auf der Insel mit am besten gefallen. Schade, dass diese Handlung so schnell vorbei war!

Was hättet ihr an der Geschichte verändert?

Das ist Grusel genug, es braucht keinen Indoraptor!

Katrin: Ich hätte den Mosasaurus oder zumindest einen anderen furchteinflößenden Dinosaurier in den Mittelpunkt gestellt und die Handlung größtenteils auf der Insel spielen lassen. Die freilebenden Urzeittiere und der ausbrechende Vulkan hätten als Horrorszenarien gereicht, da hätte es die alberne Auktion und die eindimensionalen menschlichen Antagonisten nicht gebraucht. Außerdem hätte ich Zia und Franklin mehr Sendezeit gegeben und deutlicher gezeigt, wie heldenhaft Claire ist.

Laura: Da ich die ganze Idee mit dem Militär sehr langweilig fand, hätte ich dem Film wahrscheinlich eine andere Art von Gegenspieler gegeben. Außerdem hätte ich es toll gefunden, wenn die Rettungsaktion mehr im Fokus gestanden hätte und nicht nur ein Vorwand gewesen wäre, um Claire und Owen auf die Insel zu locken.

Last, but not least: Was versprecht ihr euch vom dritten Teil, der im Juni 2021 erscheint?

Katrin: Dass der Film eine Erklärung dafür findet, wie drei Dutzend Dinosaurier (darunter Pflanzenfresser und sehr kleine), die sich nicht fortpflanzen können, tatsächlich eine Gefahr für die ganze Welt darstellen sollen. Außerdem hoffe ich, dass Maisie, Franklin und Zia wiederkehren und die Sendezeit gerechter zwischen den Charakteren verteilt wird. Hat mittlerweile irgendeiner eine Zeitmaschine erfunden? Ich möchte nicht 1.098 Tage warten! 

Laura: Genau das habe ich mich auch am Ende gefragt. Was mich außerdem gewundert hat: Wieso wurden nicht direkt Pläne geschmiedet, um die Dinosaurier doch noch zur sicheren Insel zu bringen? So viele können das doch wirklich nicht gewesen sein, da sie alle auf das Schiff gepasst haben. Ich hoffe daher, dass die Rettungsaktion im kommenden Teil immer noch eine Rolle spielen wird.

Dinosaurs are so cool!

"Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" is the sequel of the mega-hit "Jurassic World". It grossed more than 1.6 billion US dollar in 2015 and is currently ranked fifth on the "Most successful movies of all time" list. We, the "Watch.Read.Talk.", authors loved the movie and couldn't wait for the second part. In today's "Watch.Read.Discuss." we discuss some questions about the movie - like if our expectations were satisfied and what we thought about the new super dino.

Three years have passed since the tragedy at the "Jurassic World" adventure park. Meanwhile former park manager Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) has founded the "Dinosaur Protection Group" which advocates for the prehistoric animals' rights. The Isla Nublar where all the remaining species live is threatened to be destroyed by a volcanic eruption. Claire and her fellow campaigners, including paleo-veterinarian Dr. Zia Rodriguez (Daniella Pineda) and IT expert Franklin Webb (Justice Smith), try to prevent the dinosaurs' reextinction. Sir Benjamin Lockwood (James Cromwell) and his right hand Eli Mills (Rafe Spall) offer to finance a rescue mission and allow the animals to live a peaceful life on a different island. Claire convinces her ex-boyfriend and former velociraptor trainer Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) to accompany her, Franklin and Zia to Isla Nublar. On site they're not only confronted with dangerous dinosaurs and deadly lava, but also with an intrigue that almost claims their lives. Back on the mainland Claire, Owen and Webb's granddaughter Maisie (Isabella Sermon) have to stop the surviving dinosaurs, including Owen's trained velociraptor Blue, from falling into the wrongs hands.

When did you become aware of the movie and why did you want to watch it?

Katrin: I thought "Jurassic World" was awesome! Therefore it was crystal clear I would be at the movie theater opening day wearing my "Jurassic Park" hoodie! It's pretty amazing the movie was released in Germany and many other European countries two weeks earlier than in the US.

Laura: I loved the "Jurassic Park" trilogy when I was a kid, that's why I was really anticipating the new films. Since I really liked the first part of "Jurassic World" I also wanted to see "Fallen Kingdom". I was very curious how the story would go on.

How did "Fallen Kingdom" do in comparison to its predecessor?

Katrin: I liked the movie a little less than the first one. The main reason is the not-so-intense atmosphere. The original soundtrack was barely used, just a small bit of the story was actually set on Isla Nublar and except for Claire and Owen none of the other "Jurassic World" characters returned, therefore the mood wasn't the same. I still liked "Fallen Kingdom" a lot. Mainly because it had more dramatic moments than its predecessor.

Laura: Overall I also liked the first one better. Nonetheless this film is entertaining too. The great thing about these movies are the dinosaurs. The technology is so advanced that they look unbelievable realistic and this is what makes the movie experience so great. I could probably watch scenes in which they do ordinary things for hours. That's why I love to watch these films and I guess I would never leave the cinema totally disappointed. But I didn't like that the plot on the island ended so soon. I loved the setting because the park looked abandoned and had a great "lost place" feeling. The military story annoyed me, because it's boring and overdone: The idea of using dinosaurs as a "weapon" in wars just wasn't interesting. Furthermore the opponents are all completely one-dimensional and lack interesting characteristics.

What did you think of the human characters - the already known ones as well as the new ones? 

Owen, Franklin, Claire & Zia take care of Blue

Katrin: As far as I'm concerned all human characters and carnivorous dinosaurs might as well have died if the brachiosaurus (At least I think it was one.) at the pier would have lived instead. I was disappointed that only two "Jurassic World" characters returned, especially because I'm not a fan of Owen's attitude (It's way better in this movie than in the previous one!). I really liked Claire this time, because she evolved and tried to compensate for her mistakes in the past. Sadly she once again was only allowed to stand there and wait for Owen to save everyone. I was positively surprised by Maisie. In the other movies of the franchise the children were always incredibly annoying, but she avoided all of her predecessors' mistakes: She is independent, pretty calm most of the time, not whining, not putting herself in danger and not precocious. I hope she'll be in the third movie. The end of "Fallen Kingdom" is promising in this case.

Laura: The antagonists weren't the only ones who couldn't impress me. The other characters weren't very groundbreaking either. Just like Katrin I like Claire the most, but Owen is okay too. I especially enjoy their dynamics because they provide the viewer with some entertaining scenes. But that's about it. Zia and Franklin are good new characters who can entertain the viewers but overall their roles are quite one-dimensional. I liked Maisie a lot for the same reasons as Katrin. All the other children always annoyed me with their countless dumb decisions. So her character is a nice change.

What about the dinosaurs? What's your opinion on the "Indoraptor"?

Laura: As I mentioned above the dinosaurs are always a highlight. This time is no different. Blue was amazing again, but the T-Rex also had its great moment when it "rescued" Claire, Owen and Franklin from another dinosaur. Both of them have real personalities. As for the "Indoraptor": It's kinda tiring that it always has to be a dinosaur that's "more evil" than the last. As if a regular carnivorous and aggressive one wouldn't already be scary enough. I wasn't really impressed by it, mainly because it doesn't even get that much screen time. The viewer doesn't get a clear insight of what it's capable of and what exactly is setting it apart from all the other dinosaurs. The "Indominous rex" in the first part was much more interesting and terrifying. It's involved in the story from the beginning and gets a real introduction.

Katrin: I wish the production would've chosen the mosasaurus as "final enemy". Each scene with it is pure horror - especially the incredible shot of it diving through a wave with a bunch of surfers on top. It looks like a nightmare! I thought the "Indoraptor" was really disappointing. It looks like a velociraptor with a golden coloration on its side. Of course it couldn't have been as big as the "Indominus rex", because otherwise it wouldn't have fit into the villa. But in comparison to other dinosaurs it was quite boring. Being trained like a dog made it even less terrifying.

Which scene did you like the least?

That's a dinosaur and not an evil witch!

Laura: Since we're already talking about the "Indoraptor": Its death scene was completely over the top. Did it really have to fall through the glass roof in slow motion and then get brutally impaled by a dinosaur skeleton? Afterwards its corpse gets illuminated by lightning and of course there has to be dramatic music. Seeing so much exaggeration I just sat there shaking my head.

Katrin: Every single one with the "Indoraptor" - especially the scene in Maisie's bedroom. It's ridiculous how the "Indoraptor" slowly opens the door and lurks through the room like a burglar and not like a wild animal. Furthermore it was a great pity that none of the characters really reacted to the revelation of the big secret (Which I guessed pretty early.).

Which scene did you like best?

Katrin: The above-mentioned scene in which the humans flee from the island with a boat and a single brachiosaurus stands at the pier - behind him lava and ash clouds - wailing miserably like it's crying for help. I rarely get emotional while watching movies, but this moment really hurt. Like no other scene in both "Jurassic World" films it shows that dinosaurs are not toys or killers, but living creatures. The completely desperate look on Claire's face makes the scene even more sad and touching. Visually I liked basically every scene - the camera shots are impressive and very creative.

Laura: For me, that was also the best scene! It goes on long enough that the viewer can barely keep his eyes on the screen. In this movie I felt much more empathy for the dinosaurs than for any other character. Additionally, I liked all the scenes on the island very much. It's a pity that this plotline ended so soon!

What would you have changed about the story?

That's enough horror, no "Indoraptor" needed!

Katrin: I would have focussed on the mosasaurus or another terrifying dinosaur and set most of the story on the island. The free-living prehistoric animals and the erupting volcano would've been enough horror scenarios. There would've been no need for the ridiculous auction and the one-dimensional human antagonists. Additionally I would've given Zia and Franklin more screen time and shown distinctly how heroic Claire is.

Laura: I would have introduced different antagonists, because I thought the whole story with the military was boring. Furthermore, I would have loved to see the rescue operation get more importance rather than it just being an excuse to get Claire and Owen to the island.

Last, but not least: What do you expect from the third movie that's going to be released in June 2021? 

Katrin: That it has a good explanation how three dozen dinosaurs (including herbivores and very small ones) which can't procreate are a threat to the entire world. Furthermore I hope Maisie, Franklin and Zia will be back and that the screen time is equally distributed among the characters. Has anyone invented a time machine yet? I don't want to wait 1,098 days!

Laura: I asked myself the same question. Another thing that confused me: Why didn't they make plans to get the dinosaurs to the safe island after all? There really couldn't have been that many dinosaurs since all of them fit on the ship. I hope that the rescue operation will still play a part in the next movie.
