Heute stellen wir euch unsere neue Reihe "Watch.Read.Discuss" vor, bei der wir drei Autoren uns mit demselben Medium beschäftigen und danach einige Fragen diskutieren. Im ersten Teil geht es um den 2016 erschienenen Film "Doctor Strange".

Wer ihn noch nicht gesehen hat: Die Handlung dreht sich um den talentierten Neurochirurgen Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), der nach einem Autounfall seine Hände nicht mehr einwandfrei bewegen und dementsprechend nicht mehr operieren kann. Er will sich nicht mit seinem Schicksal abfinden und reist nach Kathmandu, wo er sich von einem Orden Heilung verspricht. Die Älteste (Tilda Swinton) lehrt ihm besondere magische Fähigkeiten, mit denen er die Realität verändern kann. Bald benötigen sie ihre vereinten Kräfte, um einen mächtigen Gegner zu besiegen.

Warum und in welchem Zusammenhang habt ihr den Film angesehen?

Katrin: Ich habe ihn im Kino geschaut. Normalerweise bin ich überhaupt kein Fan von Filmen mit Superhelden, aber der Trailer hat mich von der Optik total an "Inception" erinnert und da bin ich neugierig geworden.

Jessi: Ich habe ihn auch das erste Mal im Kino gesehen. Er hat mich wegen der Schauspieler interessiert und außerdem liebe ich "Marvel"-Filme. Dann habe ich ihn noch ein zweites Mal vor der Diskussion gesehen.

Laura: Normalerweise schaue ich mir jeden "Marvel"-Film im Kino an, doch "Doctor Strange" hat mich nicht wirklich angesprochen. Ich habe daher auf den Blu-ray Release gewartet. Schauen wollte ich ihn auf jeden Fall, weil er nun mal Teil des "Marvel"-Universums ist. 

Wie steht ihr zur titelgebenden Hauptfigur Stephen Strange?

Jessi: Was mir spontan in den Kopf gekommen ist, als wir über den Film geredet haben, war wie unerträglich ich den Hauptcharakter fand. Ich würde Stephen Strange als arrogant, Ich-bezogen und unhöflich zu seinen Mitmenschen beschreiben. Auch andere Charaktere bemerken häufig, wie arrogant und egoistisch er ist. Beim zweiten Gucken habe ich mir seinen Charakter, vor dem Hintergrund dieser Frage, nochmal angeschaut und versucht positive Seiten an ihm zu finden. Was man ihm lassen muss, Strange gibt nie auf. Nicht wenn kein Arzt ihm helfen kann und auch nicht wenn der Kampf gegen Kaecilius aussichtslos erscheint.

Katrin: Ich mag ihn auch nicht. Ob als erfolgreicher Arzt, geschunden auf der Suche nach dem Sinn im Leben oder als Kämpfer - Strange ist arrogant und blendet andere völlig aus. Dass er damit durchkommt ist schade.

Laura: Er ist schon ziemlich eingebildet. Jemand der immer auf andere herabsieht und sich selbst in den Himmel lobt, ist mir nicht sympathisch. Mir war es die meiste Zeit tatsächlich relativ egal, was mit ihm passiert und das ist auch kein gutes Zeichen. Ich muss aber zugeben, dass er gegen Ende etwas erträglicher wird. Ich warte mal seinen Auftritt in "Thor: Ragnarok" ab. Hoffentlich macht er da nicht wieder eine komplette Kehrtwende.

Was hat euch noch am Film gestört?

Laura: Da gibt es keine spezielle Szene. Mich hat am meisten gestört, dass man alles einfach
hinnehmen muss. Es wird so gut wie nie erklärt, warum bestimmte Dinge passieren oder warum sie möglich sind.

Katrin: Ja, finde ich auch. Es ist nervig, dass es keine wirklichen Regeln für die Magie zu geben scheint. In jeder Szene sind die jeweiligen Kräfte und Fähigkeiten einfach so wie es gerade passt.

Jessi: Genau! Zu der Magie wird nicht viel erklärt. Mich hat auch  gestört, wie durch die Magie (ohne Regeln) alle nützlichen Sachen einfach zur Hand waren. Ein Böser greift an und man hat keine Waffe, mache dir einfach eine mit Magie.

Und jetzt mal die andere Seite: Welche Szene hat euch besonders gefallen?

Jessi: Für mich war der erste Kampf zwischen Kaecilius und Strange die beste Szene. Der Hintergrund mit den Relikten war cool und Kampfszenen haben meistens mehr Action als der Rest. Außerdem mochte ich, dass Strange als Anfänger dem ehemaligen Meister Kaecilius unterlegen war und der Held nicht, wie in anderen Filmen, von Anfang an unschlagbar ist. Wie immer war auch Stan Lees Auftritt sehr cool.

Laura: Als Stephen Dormammu ausspielt, indem er eine unendliche Zeitschlaufe erschafft. Das war mal eine ganz andere Art, einen Gegenspieler zu besiegen. Ich mag es, wenn es nicht nur um Stärke, sondern auch um Verstand geht. Er hat ihn ja quasi dazu gezwungen, den Handel mit ihm einzugehen und das war einfach genial.

Katrin: Als Strange ein Stück Papier mit dem W-Lan Passwort in die Hand gedrückt bekommt und es für eine magische Formel hält. Außerdem sehen die Kämpfe, bei denen sich Gebäude und Oberflächen verformen, spektakulär aus.

Was macht die Gegenspieler in diesem Film interessant?

Laura: Ich finde sie nicht wirklich interessant. Bis auf Kaecilius sind die menschlichen Gegenspieler blass und unscheinbar. Sie erfüllen nur den Zweck, die Unterstützung in den Kampfszenen zu sein. Kaecilius ist da etwas besser ausgearbeitet. Man kann verstehen, was ihn antreibt und er setzt Strange das ein oder andere Mal gut zu. Dafür, dass Dormammu so viel Macht haben soll, kann Strange ihn mit seinem Trick schnell ausspielen. Die Idee des "Endkampfs" ist wie gesagt toll, hat aber gleichzeitig die Spannung nicht nochmal angehoben. Strange kann ja nichts passieren und dadurch wirkt Dormammu in dieser Szene einfach nicht wie eine große Bedrohung.

Jessi: Ich finde die Bösewichte, wie Laura, auch nicht besonders spannend. Kaecilius ist ein typischer Bösewicht (traumatisches Erlebnis, erlernt gute Kraft, möchte mehr Macht und wird böse). Vor allem im Vergleich zu anderen Bösewichten im "Marvel Cinematic Universe", wie Loki oder Magneto, ist Kaecilius eher langweilig. Aufgewertet wurde er für mich nur durch Mads Mikkelsen, den ich als Schauspieler sehr mag. Dormammu wurde so spät vorgestellt und war dann zu schnell besiegt, um ihn richtig ansprechend zu machen. Auch dass es keine Hintergrundgeschichte zu ihm gab, macht ihn für mich uninteressant.

Katrin: Das "Bodenpersonal", also die Abtrünnigen wie Kaecilius, finde ich unspektakulär. Sie sind mir zu einfältig und eindimensional. Dormammu hingegen ist interessant, weil er nicht der typische Bösewicht ist, der irgendwann auf die schiefe Bahn kam. Außerdem folgt der "Kampf" zwischen ihm und Strange nicht demselben Muster wie 90% aller Fantasy-, Action-, Superhelden- und Abenteuerfilme, sondern ist sehr außergewöhnlich - auch dadurch, dass Benedict Cumberbatch sowohl Strange als auch Dormammu darstellt.

Last, but not least: Was versprecht ihr euch von einer Fortsetzung?

Katrin: Dass der magische Umhang eine größere Rolle bekommt!

Laura: Strange wird als nächstes in "Thor: Ragnarok" und bei den "Avengers" auftauchen. Ich halte mich daher mit Erwartungen erst mal zurück, bis ich die nächsten Filme im "Marvel"-Universum gesehen habe. Die hängen ja alle zusammen und können die Handlungen und Charaktere der anderen Filme beeinflussen.

Jessi: Eine Szene mit Strange und Loki in "Thor: Ragnarok", nicht nur weil Benedict Cumberbatch und Tom Hiddleston in einem Film auftauchen.

Stephen Strange masters mystic powers

Today we'd like to introduce our new segment "Watch.Read.Discuss", in which we three authors  deal with the same media and discuss some questions about it. In this part we talk about the movie "Doctor Strange", which was released in 2016.

For those of you who haven't watched it yet: The plot revolves around the talented neurosurgeon Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), who can't operate anymore after his hands are ruined in a car crash. He doesn't want to except his fate and travels to Kathmandu, where he hopes to find curative treatment in an order. The Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) teaches him special magical skills, that can alternate reality. Soon they need all their powers to fight a powerful enemy.

Why and in which context did you watch the movie?

Katrin: I saw it at the movies. Usually I'm not a fan of superhero movies, but the trailer's visual effects reminded me of "Inception" and I became curious.

Jessi: I saw it at the movies too. I was interested, because of the actors and I love "Marvel"-movies. I watched it again before this discussion.

Laura: Usually I watch all "Marvel"-movies at the theatre, but "Doctor Strange" didn't appeal to me at all. So I waited for the Blu-ray release. I still wanted to watch it, because it's part of the "Marvel"-universe.

What do you think about the main character Stephen Strange?

Jessi: The first thing that came to my mind, when we talked about the movie was how obnoxious the main character is. I would describe Stephen Strange as arrogant, self-centered and impolite towards his fellow human beings. The other characters also mention frequently how arrogant and selfish he is. When I watched the movie for the second time, I looked for some positive sides of his personality. For example he is really determined. Even if no doctor can help him and the fight against Kaecilius seems hopeless.

Katrin: I don't like him either. As successful doctor, maltreated looking for a purpose in his life or as a fighter - Strange is always arrogant and completely ignores others. That he still gets what he wants is a real shame.

Laura: He is really conceited. Someone, who looks down on others and praises himself, is not likeable. Most of the time I didn't care what happened to him and that is not a good sign. But I have to admit, that he gets more bearable towards the end. I hope he won't take a step backwards in "Thor: Ragnarok".

Was there anything else that annoyed you?

Laura: Not a specific scene, but it bothered me that you just had to except everything. Most of the times it was not explained why certain things happened and how they were possible.

Katrin: Same here. It is annyoing that there seem to be no rules for the magic at all. In every scene the powers and abilities are just the way you need them to be.

Jessi: Exactly! The magic is not explained. It also bothered me that through magic (without rules) all neccessary things were always at their fingertips. A bad guy attacks and you don't have a weapon, so you just make one with magic.

And now the other perspective: What scene did you especially like?

Jessi: For me it was the first fight between Kaecilius and Strange. The background involving the relicts was cool and the fights scenes usually have more action than the rest. I also liked that newbie Strange was inferior to the former master Kaecilius, because in a lot of movies the hero is invincible from the first moment on. And like always Stan Lee's cameo was cool.

Laura: When Stephen beats Dormammu by creating an infinite time loop. That was a different way of defeating an enemy. I like that it was not just about strength, but also about wits. He basically forced him into the deal and that was genius.

Katrin: When Strange is handed a piece of paper with the wifi password and he thinks it's a magical formula. And the fights, where buildings and surfaces deform, look spectacular.

What makes the antagonists interesting?

Laura: I don't think they are really intersting. Except Kaecilius all the human opponents are blank
and unremarkable. Their only purpose is to be a support in the fights. Kaecilius is a bit more elaborate. You understand his motivation and he gets Strange quite a few times. While Dormammu, eventhough he is supposed to be powerful, is quickly defeated by Strange's trick. Like I said the showdown is pretty cool, but it wasn't that suspenseful. Strange can't be hurt and therefore Dormammu doesn't seem like a big threat in this scene.

Jessi: Like Laura I didn't like the opponents that much. Kaecilius is your average bad guy (traumatic experience, learned good magic, wants more power and becomes evil). In comparison to other antagonists in the "Marvel Cinematic Universe", like Loki or Magneto, Kaecilius is pretty boring. But he is valorized by Mads Mikkelsen, who I like as an actor. Dormammu was introduced too late and defeated too fast to be interesting. Also the fact, that there is no backstory to him, makes him unappealing to me.

Katrin: The "ground staff", so the renegades like Kaecilius, are unspectacular. They are pretty simple and one-dimensional. Dormammu is more interesting, because he's not a typical antagonist, who became bad somehere along the way. Besides the "fight" between him and Strange is extraordinary and doesn't follow the same pattern as 90% of the fantasy-, action-, superhero- and adventure-movies. It is also funny, because Benedict Cumberbatch portrays both - Strange and Dormammu.

Last, but not least: What do you expect from the sequel?

Katrin: That the magical cape has a more important part!

Laura: Strange will appear in "Thor: Ragnarok" and "Avengers: Infinity War". Therefore I withhold my expectations until I've seen the next movies in the "Marvel"-universe. They are all connected and influence the plots and characters from the other movies.

Jessi: A scene with Strange and Loki in "Thor: Ragnarok", not just because  Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hiddleston are in the same movie.
