Serien findet man schon seit einigen Jahren nicht mehr nur im Fernsehen. Anbieter wie "Netflix" oder "Amazon Prime" produzieren ausschließlich für den Onlinemarkt. Doch auch Fernsehsender und YouTube-Channel haben Webserien für sich entdeckt.
Im heutigen Post möchte ich euch eine meiner Liebsten vorstellen: "Spooked".

"Spooked" ist eine Miniserie, bestehend aus vier Folgen, die auf dem YouTube-Channel "Geek & Sundry", sowie dem Streaming-Portal "Hulu" zu sehen ist. Sie handelt von fünf Geisterjägern, die in einem Wohnmobil unterwegs sind und übernatürliche Phänomene aufklären. Connor (Julian Curtis) hat das "Paranormal Investigation Team" (P.I.T.) gegründet, um seiner kleinen Schwester Piper (Shyloh Oostwald) zu helfen. Seit dem Tod ihrer Eltern redet sie kaum noch mit ihren Mitmenschen - dafür aber mit Geistern. Connors bester Freund Elliot (Derek Mio) ist der Einzige, der die Geschwister nicht für verrückt hält und sich ihrem Team anschließt. Weitere Mitglieder finden sie in der selbsternannten Okkultspezialistin Morgan ("Blindspots" Ashley Johnson) und dem Alienfan Lindsey ("Eurekas" Neil Grayston), der ihnen auch das Equipment finanziert. Wer mit paranormalen Vorkommnissen zu kämpfen hat und sich die "Ghostbusters" nicht leisten kann, kontaktiert das "P.I.T.". So müssen sie beispielsweise eine Frau von ihrem herumspukenden Schwiegervater befreien und einen Dämon aus einer Collegestudentin vertreiben.

Was im ersten Moment nach einer x-beliebigen Science-Fiction-Show klingt, ist auf den zweiten Blick doch anders. Denn anstatt die Geisterjagd als dramatisch und spannend darzustellen, ist sie vor allem eins: Lustig. Mit Ausnahme von Piper sind die "Paranormal Investigators" nämlich, gelinde gesagt, eher durchschnittlich talentiert. "Spooked" an sich wirkt wie eine Parodie auf die zahlreichen Sendungen, die sich ernsthaft mit der Aufklärung von vermeintlich übernatürlichen Phänomen beschäftigen. Dabei spielen hier die semi-professionellen Hauptcharaktere eine wichtige Rolle. Sie gehen ihre Fälle mit ansteckend naivem Enthusiasmus und Leidenschaft an. Ihre mangelhaften Qualifikationen sind dabei nicht das größte Problem, meistens stehen sie sich selbst im Weg. Elliot versucht beispielsweise regelmäßig auf ungelenke Art und Weise mit Morgan zu flirten, was nicht selten nach hinten los geht (Elliot: "I've got a shovel... with your name on it. (...) You know, 'cause I dig you." [Morgan geht, betretenes Kopfschütteln von allen anderen] Elliot: "What, what did I say? That was a good line." Connor: "It sounded like you wanted to kill her."). Als er schließlich realisiert, dass seine Herzensdame nur Augen für seinen besten Freund hat, ist es mit der Professionalität endgültig vorbei. Noch amüsanter als das kindisch-trotzige Verhalten der Hauptfiguren sind nur die entgeisterten Blicke ihrer Klienten, die langsam realisieren, weshalb das "Paranormal Investigation Team" so günstig ist.

Häufig sind Mini-Serien hemmungslos überladen. "Spooked" gelingt es jedoch, die Fälle, die persönlichen Verwicklungen der "P.I.T.s", die Geschichten ihrer Klienten und den erfrischenden Humor in 20 bis 25 minütige Folgen zu verpacken. Beeindruckend ist ebenfalls, wie unterschiedlich die Fälle sind. Besonders die dritte Episode "Brotherly Departed" ist hier zu empfehlen, da sie mit einer überraschenden Auflösung endet. Die lockeren und cleveren Drehbücher, die lediglich im Serienfinale ein wenig ins Lächerliche abrutschen, sind genau das, was man im linearen Fernsehen eher selten sieht. Dennoch steht "Spooked" kleineren TV-Produktionen in Sachen Professionalität in nichts nach: Bis in die Episodenrollen (unter anderem Dichen Lachman, Tom Lenk und Constance Wu) prominent besetzt, passendes Setdesign, verschiedene Kameraperspektiven und ein roter Faden, der die einzelnen Folgen verbindet.

Man merkt deutlich, dass "Spooked" von Geeks für Geeks produziert wurde. Film- und Fernsehfans werden die Schauspieler aus anderen Formaten kennen. Außerdem gibt es zahlreiche Anspielungen auf bekannte Nerd-Themen ("My flamed `Goblet of Fire´, I was thinking maybe after the case we could grab a butterbeer."). Die unbeholfene, enthusiastische Art der Hauptcharaktere, denen egal ist, was andere von ihnen denken, erinnert ebenfalls an Geeks. Dementsprechend authentisch wirkt die Serie - von der Geisterjagd mal abgesehen. Obwohl... die Hauptfiguren haben sichtbar Angst vor den paranormalen Ereignissen und merken eine ganze Folge über nicht, dass die Verschlusskappe noch auf der Videokamera ist. Das ist schon fast gespenstisch realistisch. ;)
Fazit
"Spooked" ist eine witzige, kurzweilige Webserie mit dem passenden Slogan "Don't be afraid to laugh". Die schrägen Figuren bilden dabei den Kern. Durch ihre trottelige, aber sympathische Art, kann man sich leicht mit den Hauptcharakteren identifizieren. Dabei ist es sowohl unterhaltsam ihren paranormalen Ermittlungen als auch der langsamen Eskalation der privaten Probleme zuzusehen. Die abwechslungsreichen Fälle und die Professionalität der Produktion sind weitere Pluspunkte. Es gibt jedoch zwei negative Aspekte: Leider gibt es nur vier Folgen und die finale ist durch ihre eher abstruse und unkreative Handlung kein würdiger Abschluss. Ansonsten ist "Spooked" eine ideenreiche Serie, wie es sie auch im linearen Fernsehen häufiger geben sollte.

"Spooked" is a mini series, consisting of four episodes, which can be watched on the YouTube channel "Geek & Sundry" as well as "Hulu". The story follows five ghost hunters, who cruise around in a RV and investigate supernatural activities. Connor (Julian Curtis) founded the "Paranormal Investigation Team" (P.I.T.) in order to help his little sister Piper (Shyloh Oostwald). Since their parents' death she rarely ever talks to anyone - but ghosts. Connor's best friend Elliot (Derek Mio) is the only one, who doesn't believe the siblings are crazy and joins their team. Additional members are the self-proclaimed occult specialist Morgan ("Blindspot's" Ashley Johnson) and alien fan Lindsey ("Eureka's" Neil Grayston), who also pays for the equipment. People, who experience paranormal events and can't afford the "Ghostbusters", contact the "P.I.T.". In one case they have to help a woman, who is being haunted by her father-in-law. In another they have to cast out a demon.

The "P.I.T.'s" methods are a little unorthodox

This may sound like an average science fiction show, but it is different. Instead of portraying ghost hunting as dramatic and thrilling, it is mostly funny. With the exception of Piper the "Paranormal Investigators" are average talented - to put it midly. "Spooked" appears to be parodying tv shows that take paranormal activities seriously. The semi-professional main characters play an important part in this. They work their cases with naive enthusiasm and passion. But their lack of skills is not the biggest problem. Most of the time they stand in their own way. Elliot for example constantly tries to flirt with Morgan in a rather awkward way, which usually backfires (Elliot: "I've got a shovel... with your name on it. (...) You know, 'cause I dig you." [Morgan leaves, everyone else shakes their head with embarrassment] Elliot: "What, what did I say? That was a good line." Connor: "It sounded like you wanted to kill her."). The professionalism is definitely over, when he realizes she likes his best friend. The only thing that is even funnier than the main characters' immature and defiant behavior is the dumbfounded look on their clients' faces, when they slowly start to understand why the "Paranormal Investigation Team" is so cheap.

Bloody walls scare them a little bit

Mini series are often utterly overloaded with content. However "Spooked" manages to fit the cases, the "P.I.T.'s" personal conflicts, their clients' stories and the refreshing humor into 20 to 25-minute long episodes. It is also impressive how diverse their cases are. Especially the third episode "Brotherly Departed" is highly recommended as it has a rather surprising conclusion. Easygoing and clever scripts like this, just the series finale is a little too abstruse, are rare in linear television. Nevertheless "Spooked" is in no way inferior to small TV productions: A well known cast including the episode roles (Dichen Lachman, Tom Lenk and Constance Wu among others), an appropriate set design, different camera angles and a common thread that connects the individual episodes.

It is obvious that "Spooked" was made by geeks for geeks. Movie and tv fans are probably going to recognize the actors from other productions. Additionally there are numerous allusions to popular nerd topics ("My flamed `Goblet of Fire´, I was thinking maybe after the case we could grab a butterbeer."). The protagonists do not care what others think of them. Linked with their clumsy, enthusiastic nature they remind me of nerds. That makes the show seem authentic - well except for the ghost hunts. Although... the main characters are pretty scared by the paranormal activities and it takes them an entire episode to realize they never took the cap of the video camera. That is spooky realistic. ;)
Conclusion
"Spooked" is a funny, entertaining web series with the fitting slogan "Don't be afraid to laugh". The weird protagonists are the basis. Their clumsy, but likeable nature makes it easy to relate to them. Both the paranormal investigations as well as their slowly escalating private problems are fun to watch. The varying cases and the professional production are also outstanding features. But there are two negative aspects: Sadly the series is only four episodes long and the finale is not a worthy end due to an abstruse and unimaginative story line. Apart from that "Spooked" is a creative series, that should motivate some tv stations to go in similar directions.
